Artist Amanda Ward Culver created this statue to honour the personal sacrifice Brian made in the name of peace. Its home at 52 Lambeth Road resonates; originally the Royal South London Medical Dispensary, the building became part of Bethlem Hospital as The Hospital of Nervous Diseases in August 1918, operating one of the first mental health outpatients’ departments in the country. Soldiers in the First World War suffering from shellshock, now known as post-traumatic stress disorder, were treated here.
Since 2016, the building has been home to the School of Historical Dress. Sitting just outside the one-mile radius exclusion zone of Parliament, created in 2005 in an attempt by authorities to move Brian away from the seat of government, the building also faces the Imperial War Museum.
The building’s history and location made it the perfect home for Brian’s statue. The project team is eternally grateful to its principal, Professor Jenny Tiramani, and all of the trustees for supporting and enabling the building works to enable the statue’s installation.
